Valorant AFK and Queue Dodge Penalties
JettorVALORANT punishes two things automatically: going AFK (idling or leaving during a match) and queue dodging (leaving a match before it starts, for example by timing out in agent select). Depending on your history, a single incident can cost you RR, put you on a queue timer, block you from ranked for days or, in the worst case, ban the account. This guide lists every penalty Riot officially uses, what triggers it, how long it lasts, and how to avoid losing RR you did not need to lose.
The official penalty list
Riot's support article Be on Your Best Behavior lists the penalties its AFK and queue dodging systems can apply:
- Warning: tells you that you triggered the AFK / queue dodging system. No other effect.
- XP denial: you get no XP for the match that triggered the penalty.
- Rank Rating deduction: for AFK or queue dodging in a competitive match, you lose 6 to 24 RR on top of the normal result of that match.
- Queue timer: you cannot join any non-custom game for 3 to 240 minutes.
- Ranked restriction: you cannot queue ranked for 7 to 14 days.
- Game ban: you cannot play at all, from 7 days up to permanently.
Two details on the same page matter more than the numbers. First, penalties are based on the sum of your play history, not on one match, so the same mistake costs a player with a clean record much less than a repeat offender. Second, you can receive several penalties at once, and they are not always applied in the order above.
What counts as going AFK
Riot uses dedicated detection systems for AFK, queue dodging and friendly fire, and detected players may be kicked from the match. In practice, AFK covers:
- not moving or playing for long stretches during rounds,
- disconnecting and not coming back,
- leaving the match on purpose before it ends.
Quitting or throwing a match on purpose is also listed under unsportsmanlike conduct on Riot's page, so it can be reported and penalised by players as well as by the automatic system.
A short disconnect that you recover from is not the same as being flagged AFK, but there is no published time limit, so the safe rule is to reconnect as fast as possible every time.
What counts as a queue dodge
Riot defines queue dodging as entering a queue and then abruptly leaving, for example by timing out in agent select (Systems Health Series: AFK and Queue Dodge Update). In that post, Riot also said that dodging in ranked and normal queues together made up 37.07% of all participation incidents it tracked that year, which is why the penalties were made stricter.
Some players dodge on purpose to skip a map or a lobby they expect to lose. Whether that is ever worth it is a separate question; we look at the trade-off in how to protect your MMR by skipping the right match. The short version: every dodge raises the cost of the next one.
How the penalties escalate
Riot's Systems Health update (April 2023, shipped in patch 6.07) introduced two rules that still shape how penalties feel today:
- RR loss increases for consecutive queue dodges. One dodge is cheap; several in a row are not.
- Frequent, excessive AFK behaviour leads to a ranked restriction sooner, starting with a 1-day restriction in that update.
Riot has not published the exact thresholds, and the current support page gives ranges rather than a fixed ladder. What you can rely on is the direction: the more recent incidents on your account, the bigger the RR deduction, the longer the timer and the closer you are to a ranked restriction.
What a penalty does to your rank and MMR
An RR deduction changes your visible progress straight away. A ranked restriction stops you from playing ranked at all, which matters most at the top: Immortal and Radiant players need to play at least one competitive game every 7 days to keep their leaderboard spot (how the leaderboard works).
Riot does not say how AFK and dodge incidents affect hidden MMR. The losses you take while a teammate is gone, or while you are AFK, count like any other match result, so a run of abandoned games can still pull your results down. If your RR gains have shrunk after a bad week, the free MMR calculator shows whether your MMR has dropped below your rank, and Hidden MMR vs. visible rank explains how the two drift apart.
Penalties also block Premier
Any behaviour penalty or restriction makes you ineligible to join a Premier team or queue for Premier matches for 30 days from the start of the penalty (Premier team creation and management). If your team is preparing for a Stage, one careless dodge can take you out of the roster. More on that in VALORANT Premier divisions explained.
How to avoid AFK and dodge penalties
- Only queue ranked when you can finish the match. A competitive game can last well over half an hour, and leaving early is the fastest route to a restriction.
- Fix connection problems in unrated first. If your client or network keeps dropping, a ranked match is the worst place to find out.
- Lock an agent in time. Timing out in agent select counts as a dodge.
- Do not chain dodges. If you dodged once today, the next one costs more.
- Report AFK teammates instead of leaving yourself. Leaving to protest a lost game turns one loss into a loss plus a penalty.
FAQ
How much RR do you lose for going AFK in VALORANT?
Riot's support page lists a Rank Rating deduction of 6 to 24 RR for AFK or queue dodging in a competitive match, depending on your history.
How long is a VALORANT queue timer?
Between 3 and 240 minutes, according to Riot's penalty list.
How long does a ranked restriction last?
7 to 14 days on Riot's current support page. Riot's 2023 update also introduced a 1-day ranked restriction for frequent AFK behaviour.
Does one dodge get you banned?
Riot bases penalties on your whole history rather than one match, and its penalty list starts with a warning. Bans sit at the end of the ladder, for repeated or serious behaviour.
Can a penalty stop me from playing Premier?
Yes. Any behaviour penalty or restriction blocks Premier for 30 days from the start of the penalty.
Facts checked in November 2026 against Riot's support articles "Be on Your Best Behavior" and "Premier: Team Creation & Management" and the VALORANT Systems Health Series post on AFK and queue dodging.
