JettorUnderstanding the Difference Between RR and MMR
If you’ve spent any time grinding the competitive ladder in Valorant, you’ve probably hit that frustrating wall. You win a hard-fought game and get +15 Rank Rating (RR), but a single loss immediately drains -25 RR from your account. It feels punishing, and honestly, a little unfair. But Riot Games isn't just picking on you—it’s all about your hidden Matchmaking Rating (MMR).
While your visual rank (Gold, Diamond, Ascendant) is what you show off to your friends, your hidden MMR is a completely separate number that the game uses to evaluate your actual skill level.
Why the System Pulls You Down (or Pushes You Up)
Think of your MMR as an anchor. If your hidden MMR is lower than your current visual rank, the game believes you got lucky and don't belong there yet. To "fix" this, it gives you less RR for wins and takes away more for losses. It’s actively trying to pull your visual rank down to match your hidden skill level.
Conversely, if you go on a massive win streak and start dropping 30-bombs in lobbies above your rank, your hidden MMR skyrockets. Suddenly, you're gaining +28 RR per win and barely losing any on a defeat. The system is trying to fast-track you to where you belong.
How to Fix a "Doomed" MMR
So, how do you fix it when the game thinks you belong in a lower rank?
Stop stressing over the visual badge. Focus on the underlying mechanics of your gameplay, improve your round differential, and the RR will naturally follow.
